Laney Amps

Lyndon Laney’s passion for music-making developed as a bass player in the vibrant UK music scene in the mid-1960s. As a resident of England’s West Midlands, Lyndon found himself gigging in several bands, most noteworthy being “The Band of Joy” featuring John Bonham on drums and Robert Plant on vocals.

Lyndon also took a keen interest in electronics and woodworking and “because I couldn’t afford to buy one” took to making his first amplifiers in his father’s garden shed. As awareness of these great-sounding, affordable products spread, Lyndon soon became inundated by demand amongst fellow musicians to make more amps and cabs for guitar, bass and also vocals. A casual hobby quickly became a serious endeavour.

Lyndon officially started the Laney Company in September 1967 in Birmingham.

In March 1968, Robert Plant, a lifetime friend of Lyndon’s, purchased a Laney PA. He used this PA in his original work with Led Zeppelin and took it to the USA on their first tour. Production continued to grow and word of Laney’s signature tone reached another soon-to-be music legend from the Home of Metal: Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. Tony began his career-long association with Laney and in 1970 when Sabbath released Paranoid, Laney amps were visible to the music-loving world.

Over the years the business, the player list and the product range has grown and grown. Lyndon had steered the Laney business from the garden shed to an international brand. He built a great team, invested in technology and new factory premises to ensure the company continued to reach its global potential.

Today Laney is sold worldwide in over 60 countries, is award winning, critically acclaimed and boasts an enviable roster of product endorsers. The list of users reads like a who’s who of the guitar playing world. Names such as Randy Rhoads, Vinnie Moore, Warren Di Martini, Ace Frehley, Vinnie Vincent, Robert Plant, George Lynch, Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Andy Timmons, Frank Gambale, Francesco Artusato, Mattias “IA” Eklundh, Christophe Godin, The Commander in Chief, Kill Switch Engage, Neon Trees, Martin Miller, Tom Quayle….. the list goes on.
